Athlete Spotlight: Amie Quinn

Today we spotlight Amie who is literally changing so many kids lives by introducing them to triathlon with SelecTri and fostering the next generation of our sport. Let’s just say, I wish Amie was my mom because this family travels, does so much cool stuff and she’s just one of the best people on the planet.

WHEN DID YOU JOIN VALHALLA + VALKYRIE RACE TEAM?
I am pretty sure I joined in 2017 or 2018. It has been a few years.

WHEN DID YOU START TRIATHLON?

I started triathlon in 2013

TELL US ABOUT YOUR TRIATHLON JOURNEY:
When my youngest son was a baby, I was looking for things to do with him and found a mom’s running group. I don’t really like running but it was something to do. In 2012, I ran a half marathon; after that race, I needed a new challenge but did not want to run a marathon. I grew up swimming (summer swim club in Canada) and could ride a bike and now that I could run, why not sign up for a triathlon. I signed up for the Nations Triathlon in DC, joined a triathlon team, and have been racing ever since. When we moved to Texas in 2014, they had youth races for Tavish; he just loved it. In 2015, he joined SelecTri. I was working on my coaching certification and noticed they needed some help at SelecTri practices. I started coaching with SelecTri in the fall of 2015. In 2019, I bought the team. I focus more on coaching than training these days, but I try to race a few times each year. I have finished two Ironmans and eight 70.3 distances. I do enjoy off-road triathlons and might need to do an Xterra race next year.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RACE?
I have a love/hate relationship with Hawaii 70.3. I’ve done it twice; it is the prettiest race course I have ever done, but it is not easy.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT IN THIS SPORT?
Going under 6 hours at 70.3 Texas in 2016.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE?
Running, I really suck at running.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE POST RACE FOOD?
Burgers

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
I have been married to Kyle Quinn for 19 years, and we have two boys: Tavish, who is 16, and Callen, who is 13. They all race triathlons too.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROFESSIONAL/PERSONAL LIFE.
I run SelecTri, a youth and junior triathlon team in The Woodlands. I also teach at Cunae International School, where I teach IB Biology (grade 11 and 12) and middle school science.

WHAT IS SOMETHING NO ONE WOULD EVER GUESS/KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I have a Master’s degree in Fish Physiology and Ecotoxicology.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS TEAM?
Mostly how amazing all the women are and how they are such a supportive group of women. The men are pretty awesome too.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE AUTHOR?
Marian Keyes

WHATโ€™S YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT?

Thai Thai Bistro in Volcano, Hawaii

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION?
My mom. I love that I can race with her and always worry that she will destroy me. I want to be like her when I grow up.

WHAT EXCITING PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE NEXT YEAR?
My mom and I are doing Indian Wells 70.3 and the Disney Marathon.
